Key point
The share of shared grants in England is 40% in 1617–1649 and 8% in the 18th century.
- Definition
- Share of grants with two or more grantees. For England the count is the number of surnames printed in Woodcroft's margin.
- Formula
- grants with ≥ 2 grantees ÷ grants
- How to read it
- In 1617–1649 about four grants in ten are shared; from the 18th century the decade share moves between 3.6% (1780s) and 17.1% (1760s).
- Caveats
- A margin surname dropped or split by the OCR moves the value. Entries with no margin surname read are left out.
