Letter addressees and concentration
Distinct addressee strings parsed from the titles of the author's letters, the share of the top one and top three, and a Herfindahl index.
In the 895 collections with letters, 93.4% of the 81,842 letters carry an addressee string in the title. Summed over collections there are 34,890 distinct addressees (25,303 distinct strings corpus-wide); a collection's median is 14, and among letters with an addressee the top three take a median of 41%. The Ganjae jip (1,287), Myeonu jip (1,033) and Songja daejeon (798) have the most.
- Formula
- If the title begins with (又·再·三…)答·與·上·寄·復·報·奉·呈·贈·簡·謝·代, the addressee is the text up to 書·簡·問目·別紙·狀·札·啓·帖·疏·牘 etc. (and before a topic verb such as 論·問·議); imagined letters (擬…) are blank. Distinct = distinct strings within a collection (the site total sums per-collection counts).
- Caveats
- String level: '退溪先生', '李景浩' and '李滉' are three addressees. Parsing precision was measured on a sample (reliability card).

Precision 94.3% (283/300, Wilson 95% 91.1%–96.4%) on 300 parsed and 60 unparsed letters (two strata, unweighted); unweighted sample recall 79.9% (of 353 with a coder-found name). Codebook and all judgments on the Data page.
