Animal Signals: What We Know, and How We Know It

용어Glossary

신호Signal
A sound, display, substance or other trait that evolved or was learned to affect a receiver, where the receiver's response also benefits the sender.
단서Cue
A feature that receivers can learn from but which did not arise for that purpose, such as footsteps that let a predator find prey.
의미Meaning
What a signal conveys to the receiver. A signal occurring with a situation (correlation) is not enough; whether receivers respond accordingly has to be tested.
구문Syntax
Rules for the order of signal units. These are tested with playback experiments: does changing the order change the receiver's response?
참조성Referentiality
Whether a signal points to a specific external thing, such as a snake or a hawk. Tested by whether the signal alone produces a response suited to that thing.
조합성Compositionality
When the meanings of units add up to the meaning of the combination. Seeing combinations is not enough; the response to the combination must be tested against responses to its parts.
Playback experiment
An experiment that plays recorded or synthetic signals and measures the response. Because conditions can be varied, it tests cause more directly than observation.
Manipulation experiment
An experiment that changes the signal or the environment directly and compares outcomes.
Observational correlation
Observing animals as they are to see which signals go with which situations. It shows patterns; whether they carry meaning needs separate testing.
Machine-learning classification and cross-validation unit
Testing whether a computer can sort signals into categories. If calls from the same day or situation appear in both training and test sets, accuracy can look higher than it is, so the unit held out matters.
Trained task
A study that gives trained animals a task and measures performance. The key question is whether experimenter cues were blocked.
Blinding
Keeping scorers or experimenters unaware of the condition, so that expectations do not leak into judgments or into the animal's behavior.
Independent unit
The unit of repetition that can be treated as independent. Thousands of calls from three animals count as three; one group counts as one.
Independent replication
Another team with no overlapping authors testing the same claim in the same species and getting the same result.
Clever Hans effect
When an animal responds to a person's unconscious movements, gaze or voice rather than to the task itself. Named after Hans, the horse that seemed to count, reported by Pfungst in a 1907 book.
Sender and receiver
The one producing a signal and the one receiving it. That a signal carries information (sender side) and that receivers use it (receiver side) are separate claims needing separate tests.
코다Coda
A short burst of clicks made by sperm whales. Types are distinguished by the proportions of click intervals (rhythm) and total length (tempo).
NR·UNKNR and UNK
Abbreviations used in the number fields of claim cards. NR means the paper did not report it; UNK means it could not be confirmed from the paper.
Bandwidth (kernel density)
The value that sets how much a distribution is smoothed when drawn as a curve. Small values give more peaks, large values fewer.

How grades were assigned

Grades attach to each claim, not to papers. The original paper is read and the steps below are checked in order; the first one that applies decides the grade. Grades were not assigned from press or review summaries.

A grade marks where the reported study design behind each claim stands. It is not a judgment of the researchers or of a study's worth, and the criteria are published in full.

  1. 근거 문헌이 이 주장을 시험하지 않았다면 NS(이 연구가 보인 것이 아니다). If the source did not test this claim: NS (not what this study showed), noting what was left untested.
  2. 시험했지만 지지되지 않았다면 TN(시험했지만 확인되지 않았다).If it was tested and not supported: TN.
E.If the only support is surveys, owner reports, anecdotes, demonstrations or press: E.
D if any of these holds: fewer than 10 independent units while the claim is about a species or group in general; a single event described; observation or coding with neither blinding nor a reliability check (where the paper does not report it, this is read as absent only for observational designs); machine learning with training and test data split only at the level of single calls; weak cue control in a trained task.
C if it is observational correlation or machine-learning classification with controls for other explanations. Observational designs are capped at C, however often they are replicated.
B.B if a playback or manipulation experiment (or a quasi-experiment with a stated identification strategy) tested this claim directly.
A.A if, on top of B, a team with no overlapping authors replicated the same claim in the same species.

If a claim is about a particular individual (such as Clever Hans), the fewer-than-10 rule does not apply; trials of that individual are the units. Claims whose full text could not be read are not shown on this site.

Kinds of NS: what was not tested
