Median number of characters per article; the distribution table adds the 10th, 25th, 75th, 90th and 99th percentiles.

Key point

The first thing to check before comparing article-based metrics across reigns: equal article counts with twice the median length mean twice as much text.

Formula: Median(n_han) per edition
How to read it: Medians mostly fall between 30 and 80 characters. Very short articles ('日食' alone) are so numerous that the median stays low, and the mean is two to three times the median.
Caveats: Describes the editorial unit, not the importance of events.
