Characters

Number of Chinese characters in the article text (including notes and historians' comments; titles and bibliographic data excluded).

52.5Mcharacters, 33 editions

Key point

The only complete count on which any statement about the Sillok's size can rest: 52.5 million characters across all 33 editions, 44.6 million in the principal editions of Taejo–Cheoljong alone.

Formula: Count of CJK unified ideographs and extensions; Hangul (modern editorial notes) counted separately.
How to read it: About 52.5 million across the 33 editions, 44.6 million in the principal editions of Taejo–Cheoljong. Jungjong is the longest edition (5.9 million); Jeongjo has many characters for its article count — its articles are long.
Caveats: Punctuation and spaces are not counted. Both characters of an editorial correction '(甲)〔乙〕' are counted.
External check: Same counting method as the 2026-09 conversion check (XML <text> characters vs converted text, 743 files identical).

All 33 editions; muted color marks revised, supplemented, supplement-and-corrections and second-draft editions.

By year, principal editions. Note the trough around the Imjin War (1592–) and the decline after Jeongjo.
