Solar-eclipse articles matched by computation
Articles mentioning '日食' are classified by type (observation report, forecast, rescue ritual, non-occurrence, discussion); the metric is the share whose date lies within ±1 day of a computed eclipse visible from Seoul.
Answers the question 'Can the Sillok's eclipse records be trusted?' type by type: 65% of observation reports match an eclipse visible from Seoul and 95% an eclipse somewhere on Earth; most of the rest are eclipses after sunset that were recorded from calculation. Counting every '日食' article as an observation drops the rate to 24%, so never use the total that ignores type.
- Formula
- Per type: matched / articles of that type. Eclipses computed from DE406 at every new moon, testing whether Sun and Moon overlap above the Seoul horizon. The ±1-day window matches the calendar conversion uncertainty; the ±0 value is given too.
- How to read it
- The match rate of observation reports is the site's headline number. Forecast and ritual articles include eclipses that were never visible (below the horizon or elsewhere), so lower rates there are expected.
- Caveats
- Types were coded article by article (codebook published), with precision and its 95% interval on the reliability card. Ahn & Lee (2004) counted events; this site counts articles, so the totals differ.
- External check
- Ahn & Lee (2004) Table 1: 231 Sillok eclipse records, 11 mis-dated, 60 not visible.
- Reliability card
- externalExternal match — compared with an astronomical computation
Of 84 observation-report articles, 55 fall within ±1 day of a computed eclipse visible from Seoul = 65.5% (Wilson 95% 54.8%–74.8%); 95.2% (80) match an eclipse somewhere on Earth (Espenak–Meeus canon).
Classification by type: all 332 articles were coded by four coders; 34 were blind re-coded by another coder — agreement 91.2%, κ = 0.89 (κ = 0.94 when pooled into observation / not an eclipse / other).

Seen the other way around: of the 185 computed eclipses visible from Seoul in 1392–1863, 61 (33%) have a '日食' article within ±1 day. Capture rates by magnitude are not broken out in this version.
