Repertoire concentration (HHI)

How concentrated a season's work performances are among few composers — the Herfindahl–Hirschman index applied to composer shares.

Formula: Σ (share of composer i)². 1 = a single composer; N equal composers give 1/N. Traditional, anthem, unattributed, not-a-work and joint credits enter as one bucket per category.
How to read it: From 0.099 in 1842–43 (about 10 equal composers) to 0.011 in 2025–26 (about 89). Not a monotonic decline: it rose in 92 of the 183 steps between completed seasons.
Caveats: Unit and composer rules changed in 1.1 (1.0 gave 0.016 for 2025–26). Restricting the count to subscription concerts changes the sample and the program mix, and therefore the value (2025–26: 0.016 subscription only, 0.011 all concerts).
