New-work re-performance (10 years)

Share of works first performed by the NY Phil that are played again in another season within 10 years — works whose composer was alive in the season of the first performance (new in 1.4).

Formula
For each work, the years from its first season to its next season with a performance (other programs in the same season belong to the first run). Works not yet played again are censored at the last completed season (2025–26). 1 − S(10) from the Kaplan–Meier curve; 95% interval from Greenwood's variance on the log(−log) scale. Works first seen in the archive's first season (1842–43) have an unknown earlier history; they are treated as left-truncated and left out, and their number is shown in the table.
How to read it
Of 3,450 works by living composers (6 left-truncated works left out), 28.4% were played again within 10 years (26.9–29.9%). By period of first performance: 1843–1899 38.9%, 1900–1949 34.3%, 1950–1999 19.4%, 2000 onward 16.8% (13.7–20.4%). Including composers without reviewed dates: 18.1%; all works: 21.0%.
Caveats
'Composer alive at the first performance' stands in for a new work — composition dates are not in the record. Dates are reviewed only for composers with 10+ performances, so this set leans toward often-played composers (read it with the value that includes composers without dates). Only the same work number counts as the same work, so arrangements and excerpts filed under another number count separately. Many works since 2000 have not been followed for a full 10 years (Kaplan–Meier accounts for the censoring). Performances by other orchestras are not seen.

Works by living composers, by period of first performance. Horizontal: years since the first season (up to 30); vertical: 1 − Kaplan–Meier survival. The 2000-on line has short follow-up, so few works remain at later years.

New York Philharmonic Performance History: works, composers and conductors on more than 15,000 programs from the first concert in December 1842 to the current season. Besides the Philharmonic proper, the archive holds programs of the New York Symphony, the Stadium concerts and chamber series; this site does not filter them out. Wikidata (Wikimedia Foundation) person items: year of birth (P569) and death (P570). Composers with at least 10 NY Phil performances (U1) were searched by name; only human items with a music occupation were kept and checked against the composer's first season (born at least five years earlier). Names with several candidates or a failed check were resolved one by one by the editor. The matching table (composer_wikidata.csv) is published. https://www.wikidata.org/ · License: CC0 1.0
